Wendy, I don't recall the child y'all adopted, but what I can remember from when I knew you and your sister as little girls, is how kind and loving you have always been, and everything you do and write as an adult reflects these qualities. I'm so happy to have found your blogs and to be able to read your musings, and to bask in the glow of the amazing person that you are. The holiday season is a stressful time, but taking the time to help others, even in small ways, is balm to the soul. And I seriously doubt that the kindnesses you have shown to others is entirely a reflection of guilt - we can see in another person's eyes when that person truly cares about others. And, as you say, even though we learn that we can't help or save everyone, we reach an accommodation with ourselves to do what we can and focus on small, everyday kindnesses. I also recall the love and glee with which your mom decorated packages and your home (huge, beautiful, salmom-colored poinsettias). Here's hoping you and your family have a healthy, loving holiday season. LOL

P.S. What has made me laugh is remembering bmxmom jumping around on one foot and repeating "la toilette!" :-)

Wendy, as always I enjoy your writing--Louisiana Christmas 1950 brought back memories--I was 7. The sparse tree, the huge lights, the silver tinsel, and the beautiful ornaments (wish my mother had kept them also)! It was a different time . . .

I love this post. I remember how sad you were about Gladys, and when Sally Struthers came on the TV begging us to help feed the children of Indonesia. Simple kindnesses can make a huge difference each and everyday. A kind word and a smile go a long way. You never know when someone might need one.
